Katie Bonner – Clinical PhD Student

I am a Paediatric Doctor in training, and my main interest is in lung health. I started my PhD at Imperial in September 2018, working on the Breathing Together Study. This involves work both in local hospitals, recruiting children with healthy lungs, wheezing and asthma to our study, as well as in the laboratory working with airway epithelial cells and the lower airway immune environment. This work aims to understand why some children develop severe wheezing in the preschool years and later asthma. In particular I’m trying to understand the role of genetic and environmental factors, including allergens, viruses and bacteria, in the initiation of wheezing and asthma. The aim is to be able to more accurately predict which children will develop wheezing and asthma, and guide more effective treatments in the future.
