James Cook – MD/PhD Student

I am a medical doctor specialising in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine.  As well as continuing my clinical work at The Royal Brompton Hospital I am completing a PhD at Imperial College.  My research focuses on young children (under 5 years) who have recurrent attacks of difficulty in breathing and wheeze.  This is a very common symptom and attacks frequently require admission to hospital and even intensive care. Unfortunately we do not have any effective treatments to prevent these attacks from occurring. The attacks are often triggered by common viruses and bacteria that all young children are exposed to.  How the immune system responds to these infections seems to be an important factor in the development of symptoms.  My research is aimed at trying to better understand differences in how the immune system is working in the lungs of these children leading to more effective treatments in the future.
