Gill Martin – Lab Manager

I am the Senior Support Technician/ Departmental Safety Officer for the Department of Inflammation, Repair and Development at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI). Prior to joining the NHLI in September in 1997, I worked as a Technician in the department of Physiology and Biophysics at St Marys Hospital Medical School and before that for Biorex Laboratories in Islington. In 2009 I obtained my NEBOSH certificate, in 2015 I also completed the Biosafety Practitioner course (Level 1).

In my current role I manage the laboratories and laboratory services for the Inflammation, Repair and Development Department. This includes ensuring the smooth running of the laboratories and giving expertise, advice and support to all the staff and students in the section on matters of Health and Safety. In 2011 I joined the Health and Safety Compliance Team, which carries out safety inspections of all NHLI sections. This also involves liaising with other members of the team and the NHLI Safety and Technical Services Coordinator, attending committee meetings and updating inspection forms and documents and ensuring standards are met and maintained. The NHLI HSCT recently won the Provost’s Team award for excellence in Health and Safety.
